Health Services

Clinical Services

Nurse Practitioners provide a broad range of health care services including physical assessment, diagnosis and treatment within the Extended Class scope of nursing practice. Physicians are also available on a regular, part-time basis.

Primary health care service is available at the Centre on a daily basis. Outreach clinics are offered on a regular basis in each community. A weekly ‘street clinic’ is also held at the Kenora Fellowship Centre.

Health Education and promotion through group education and issue-specific workshops is also provided on request.

Traditional Health Care

The Traditional Health Coordinator works with a network of traditional healers and elders who act as advisory and referral resources, to promote access to traditional health services.

In consultation with elders and healers, the Traditional health Coordinator also supports balance between traditional and contemporary perspectives on health and wellness.

The Traditional health Coordinator is available to make referrals and to coordinate or facilitate group education/workshops on traditional values, beliefs, spirituality, medicines and healing ceremonies.

Diabetes Education

Diabetes Educators provide education and promote lifestyle choices geared toward prevention of diabetes.

The diabetes Educators provide information and support for effective health management to ensure optimal quality of life and prevent complications for those diagnosed with diabetes.

Nutrition

A Dietitian offers education and counselling aimed at promoting and maintaining health, preventing disease and complications, and improved overall quality of life. Services are geared to the unique cultural, economic and geographic circumstances of communities in the Centre’s catchment area.

The Dietitian also works with physicians and clinical staff to coordinate nutritional care within clients’ overall plan of health care.>

Mental/Emotional Health & Wellness

A mental Health & Wellness Worker is responsible for planning and delivering group education and workshops that promote wellness and address preventative strategies.

This worker is available to address the emotional and mental health needs of clients and family members in dealing with illness, chronic disease, or other issues affecting overall health.

Transportation

Transportation services are available for groups and individuals in Kenora who are without access to the Centre.

Advance arrangements for transportation are required.

HIV/AIDS Education

This program provides education in community and school settings, to raise awareness and assist in prevention of this condition. Support is also available for individuals and family members living with HIV/AIDS.

FASD & Child Nutrition

Two Program Consultants work to reduce the risk of FASD by promoting awareness and providing education focussed on pregnant women, women of child-bearing age, and their partners. The program also works with FASD-affected individuals and their families to improve behavioural, educational, and social outcomes.

A special focus of this program is the establishment of multi-disciplinary diagnostic services within Northwestern Ontario.

Nanaandawe’iyewigamig Healing Lodge

This facility is located at Longbow Lake and was established to provide a culture-based, residential healing program for at-risk youth between 16 and 24 years of age. The intent of the program is to break the cycle of violence and abuse within families and communities through development of knowledge and skills that promote healthy lifestyles.

Outreach services including workshops and support relating to grief recovery and suicide prevention are also available.

Residential School “Healing Path to Wellness” Program

Thirteen Community Facilitators/Support Workers are available at the community level to increase awareness of the residential schools’ impacts on survivors and their families, and to promote health and wellness among residential school survivors. This is done through presentations and workshops, support to individuals and families, and by facilitating access to services.

LOWDH Outpatient Hostel

This facility provides accommodation and support for individuals and families requiring access to Lake of the Woods District Hospital for medical reasons. Language interpretation and client advocacy services are also available.
